Our IP Team


Each member of our team is an experienced professional having a medical, software, or engineering degree.  Several have advanced degrees.  Each also has experience working in the medical, software or engineering fields.  The language skills of our team include French and Japanese.  

Our registered patent attorneys have a variety of experience in numerous complex litigations involving patent, trademark, copyright and trade secret matters in front of various courts and the US ITC.  One of our attorneys has been successful defending several infringement cases in the notoriously plaintiff-friendly Eastern District of Texas.  Our attorneys have experience with cases both big and small, including litigation where the damages were alleged to be over $100,000,000.  This same attorney was previously part of an elite group of intellectual property attorneys that were known for conducting an patent litigation and licensing campaign that collected over one billion dollars ($1,000,000,000) for the patent owner.  Our attorneys have also been local and co-counsel for law firms requiring specific expertise with intellectual property litigation. 

Our team has experience preparing patent applications in a wide variety of fields including food, drugs, nutritional supplements, nutraceuticals, electronics, magnetism, lasers, optics, passive tag coding and applications, high energy photon linear accelerators, vehicle management and location systems, medical devices and systems, mobile telephone devices and systems, precision measurement systems, precision targeting systems, telephony, therapeutic compositions, medical devices, chemical compounds, security systems, anti-terrorism and force protection measures, mining and construction equipment, steel production, haulage systems, vehicles and vehicular components, materials recycling, manufacturing and entertainment.   

        Members of the firm have experience that includes obtaining and enforcing intellectual property rights (including patents) for businesses and for individual inventors, including noted inventor the late Jerome H. Lemelson (frequently referred to as Jerry Lemelson), including working alongside noted patent attorney Gerald D. Hosier (sometimes referred to as Gerry Hosier, but more frequently as Jerry Hosier).  Members of the firm have experience representing plaintiffs and representing defendants in complex actions where multiple patents were asserted against multiple companies or other entities. 


William J. (Hal) Hallihan 

Hal Hallihan is a member of Hallihan IP Partners, LLC and has in excess of twenty years of experience working on intellectual property matters. Mr. Hallihan is a registered patent attorney in the United States and is also a registered patent agent in Canada. His practice is primarily focused on intellectual property, information technology matters and litigation. 

Mr. Hallihan's practical experience includes client counseling, product development and patent design-around counseling, technology transfer, patent prosecution, trademark prosecution, patent interference, patent reexamination, patent re-issue, due diligence, licensing and intellectual property litigation. His legal experience includes e-commerce, trademarks, copyrights, trade secrets, antitrust, unfair competition, RICO actions, UCC issues and assorted state law claims.  Mr. Hallihan has authored several articles on various intellectual property topics and also made presentations on a variety of intellectual property topics. Mr. Hallihan's experience includes practicing law at both large multi-national and intellectual property boutique firms. Much of his experience also comes from practicing with an elite group of intellectual property attorneys that were known for conducting an intellectual property litigation and licensing campaign that successfully collected in excess of one billion dollars ($1,000,000,000) for the intellectual property owner. 

Hal Hallihan has prepared and prosecuted patent applications in the mechanical, electro-mechanical, electrical, software, and chemical arts. His patent preparation and prosecution experience covers a variety of technologies, including slot machines and gaming devices, business methods, Internet/computer based devices and methods, medical devices and systems, computer software, data storage systems, optical and magnetic code readers/writers, wireless communications, vehicles, vehicular components and systems, synthetic speech synthesizers, etch resists for manufacturing printed circuit boards, free-piston engines, electronic security systems, print imaging systems, gas sensors, lighting systems, tools, metals manufacturing, waste recycling, petroleum and synthetic petroleum products, nutritional supplements, and kitchen gadgets. 

Mr. Hallihan's litigation experience includes patents, trademarks, copyrights, antitrust, trade secrets, unfair competition, RICO, UCC issues, and assorted state law claims. Hal Hallihan's patent litigation experience includes nutritional supplements, Internet and/or computer based methods, software, computer image analysis, optical character recognition devices, bar coding, digital compression and decompression techniques, semiconductors, surface mounted devices, machine tool controls, fuel cells, kitchen gadgets, soil stabilizers, medical devices, footwear and tools. 

Hal Hallihan is experienced in analyzing patentability, infringement, or invalidity issues and providing appropriate opinions regarding the same. Mr. Hallihan is experienced in agreement preparation and in counseling clients in a wide variety of intellectual property matters. Mr. Hallihan has also handled interferences before the U.S. Board of Patent Appeals and Interferences. Hal Hallihan has worked at obtaining and enforcing intellectual property rights for multinational corporations, midsize corporations and startups.  Mr. Hallihan has counseled individuals all the way up to Fortune 500 companies on a variety of technology and/or legal related matters.  

Hal Hallihan earned his Bachelor of Science degree in engineering from the University of Illinois at Champaign-Urbana and has a Juris Doctor from the University of Illinois at Chicago. He has been admitted to practice in the Supreme Court of Illinois, the United States Patent and Trademark Office, the Canadian Intellectual Property Office, the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the U.S. District Court for the Central District of Illinois, the Trial Bar of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit and the U.S. Supreme Court.


David Jo


Mr. Jo  spent over 20 years in IT consulting and owned his own custom software company. He previously worked at two prominent Chicago accounting and law firms.  Mr. Jo acts as our in-house software expert and is often consulted for issues concerning Japanese language documents.  

        Mr. Jo has a Bachelor of Arts degree in Computer Studies and Economics from Northwestern University in Evanston, Illinois.  Prior to moving to the United States to attend Northwestern University, Mr. Jo lived in Tokyo, Japan.

Hagar Hallihan

Hagar Hallihan has an MSN in nursing and worked in ICUs for many years.  She is currently completely the PhD program in Nursing at the University of Illinois at Chicago, having finished all the coursework and is presently working on her dissertation.  She acts as our in-house expert on certain medical issues or technology.
